Susan G. Komen for the Cure's Richmond affiliate is preparing for the next Race for the Cure. The organization is a recognized leader in breast cancer research funding.

The Richmond Komen Race for the Cure accepts team and individual registrations starting each November. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is committed to fighting breast cancer by funding breast cancer research. Komen for Cure has invested more than $1.2 billion in the fight against breast cancer.

Breast cancer facts

According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is the most common cancer in women after skin cancer. The survival rate is going up, thanks to earlier diagnosis and better treatment options. The chance of being diagnosed with invasive breast cancer is 1 in 8, and 1 in 35 will die from the disease.

The Richmond affiliate

Jennifer Norvell Saunders created the Richmond affiliate in 1998 after her mother Joanne died of breast cancer, according to the affiliate’s website. The Richmond affiliate focuses on Central Virginia and is engaged in 11 regional projects. The affiliate also funds breast cancer research through the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation Award and Research Grant Program. Organizers of this year’s Race for the Cure hope to meet a goal of 12,000 and $2 million for breast cancer research. The first race was held on Mother's Day weekend in 1998. It has since become an annual tradition for the Richmond affiliate to hold the Race for the Cure on Mother's Day weekend.

Not just a 5K race

Although the 5K race is usually the main event, there are other ways to participate. Those who participate in the Sleep in for the Cure also raise funds and receive a Race for the Cure t-shirt. They may also choose to participate as part of a team. The Kids for the Cure Fun Run is sponsored by Capital One. Children 6-12 years old complete a one-half mile run. The first 500 participants receive a t-shirt. There is also a 1K Run. Proceeds from all these events support research for a breast cancer cure.
